In today’s letters to the editor: Donald Trump; foreign interference; Danielle Smith; grocery costs; Canada Post; the bear

Letters to the editor, Feb. 3: ‘It would be naive to deny there won’t be those eager to sell their country for a regular Mar-a-Largo or White House invitation’U.S. President Donald Trump looks on as reporters ask questions aboard Air Force One during a flight from Las Vegas, Nev., to Miami, Fla., on Jan. 25.: It would be a mistake to continue dismissing Donald Trump’s denigration of Canada as the “51st state” as mere trolling or simply a negotiating tactic.

It would be naive to deny there won’t be those eager to sell their country for a regular Mar-a-Largo or White House invitation, to assume legal-constitutional details will prove insurmountable or to conclude “political realities” will prove unpalatable.Full-fledged 51st-state status is not the only route to de facto loss of Canadian sovereignty.

Perhaps we should be more concerned about the “troubling conduct in dealings with foreign powers” that she did observe. Three years ago, MI5 publicly named a lawyer who attempted to influence British MPs on behalf of China, even though no laws may have been broken. They also named MPs who benefited. It seems our problem here lies at the top of our government. No public inquiry or special rapporteur can compensate for their reluctance to know and publicly confront this issue.

The time to hear all voices is when policy decisions need to balance scientific evidence with social, economic, ethical and political considerations. Letting all voices be heard is not science.
