The National Post carried two pieces on the same day about homelessness. Do the writers truly believe that what Vancouver is experiencing is a “homelessness” crisis? That unaffordable housing is the root cause of so many people living outside? How much more purposeful the articles would have been if one of the headlines had been: “What the tragic death of a Mountie trying to help says about the addiction and mental health crisis.
While this rationale does not serve the interests of certain activist elements, regular citizens can observe and understand that addiction and mental health are major drivers of the problem. Otherwise, these “encampments” and their surrounding areas would not be plagued with drug dealing, drug use, discarded needles, property crime, and violent crime.Article content
