If elected school boards can’t do the job, they should get out of the wayRandall Denley, as usual, identifies an issue that should be of concern to Canadians. School boards are “democratically” elected in the sense that the number of eligible voters is wide, but those who actually vote are both few in number, and adverse-selected from the population affected, namely parents who, logically, want everything for their children. They rarely represent the population at large.
Idle hands are the devil’s workshop, the saying goes, and as the Ontario government removes yet more duties from trustees, they will inevitably look for other matters to occupy their time. The record shows that those things rarely include the actual education of children.
