I joined that committee in 2011 and assumed the chairmanship in 2016. The New Library Build Committee’s work and efforts over almost 15 years has kept the project front and center, encouraging commentaries — some supportive, some cautious — from persons within the business, education and social enterprise communities.
Yes, the proposed new library is an expensive infrastructure project. But so is any vital infrastructure project of comparable scale. And the need is there. Conversations and discussions around the investment and cost of a new library have been protracted, and, unfortunately, have not produced a go-forward plan to date.There are three key decisions essential to a go-forward plan for a new public library: securing cost-sharing with the provincial and federal levels of government.
