The Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre expansion is set to provide much-needed relief to the city's homeless population as it faces extreme weather conditions.
The Blood Tribe Department of Health views the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre expansion as a crucial lifeline in supporting the city's most vulnerable residents. After enduring supply chain setbacks, the expansion is projected to be finished by the month's end, adding 109 new beds to the existing facility.
Currently, the shelter accommodates 91 individuals, but the Blood Tribe Department of Health (BTDH), which manages the shelter, adheres to a strict policy of never turning anyone in need of shelter away. 'We traditionally don't turn anyone away,' stated Kash Shade, BTDH chief operating officer. 'However, during periods of extreme cold, we strongly encourage everyone to seek refuge within the shelter.' With provincial temperatures anticipated to plunge into 'extreme-cold' categories over the next few weeks, the shelter is currently experiencing consistent overcrowding every night. 'We're often seeing upwards of 200 people seeking shelter each night,' revealed shelter director Suzanne Buchanan. 'We desperately need this expansion to be completed as soon as possible.'
