CALGARY—Jan. 27 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Holocaust remains a stain on the soul of the western world, especially. Antisemitism is their original sin, as slavery is America’s. There continues to be a rise in antisemitism, and, as stated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, “it is more important than ever for us to recognize the critical lessons of Holocaust.” This warning is especially imperative in the period of rising fascism we are witnessing today.
National Council of Canadian Muslims CEO Stephen Brown has remarked that amid the increase in threats and violence, there has not been an effort by lawmakers to formulate a strategy to counter this surge. Tepid responses, hollow words of support, and perfunctory social media messages on days of remembrance litter the communications of our elected leaders; however, these are duplicitous at best.
