Langford city officials are still undecided on the future of the Westhills YW/YMCA, which has incurred $10 million in losses since 2016. The city is considering purchasing the facility for $35 million, potentially saving taxpayers $121 million over 42 years compared to the current agreement. The community has shown strong interest, with numerous residents attending council meetings to voice their opinions.
There’s still no clear decision on what Langford will do with the Westhills YW/YMCA facility, which has lost $10 million in operating costs since it first opened in 2016.
The city has been mulling what to do with the facility, since in 2013 then-Langford council signed a tripartite agreement where the city acted as guarantor, meaning it’s on the hook to pay for the building lease and expenses. Last month, the city said it was considering buying the facility for $35 million, a move that the municipality says would save taxpayers nearly $15 million over the next 17 years, and $121 million over the next 42 years, compared to the current arrangement.
The facility, which is also home to a library branch and the city’s only swimming pool, has been a hot topic in the community, with residents coming out to the Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 council meetings to discuss theAt the meeting Monday night, many people were in the council chambers weighing in on the matter for over an hour.
After the public input wrapped up, council asked more questions to staff, before eventually motioning to defer the decision to the Dec. 16 special council meeting, one day before the sale offer expires.Anyone interested in providing feedback can send comments to the email [email protected] or mail them to city hall at Unit 117, 877 Goldstream Ave.The Westhills YW/YMCA facility in Langford is shown.
