Dennis Moriarty planted his yard to attract bees, butterflies and pollinators. But it also brought him a citation from the city demanding he mow the garden down. His call to action on Twitter has united gardeners worldwide. (kcur)

The 80-year-old U.S. Army veteran says his yard is so steep, he wasn't able to continue mowing it. So in April 2020, he covered the 1,500 square feet with plastic to kill the grass. Then this year, he planted wildflower seeds, which quickly bloomed.

After he took his cause to Twitter, Moriarty says Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas direct-messaged him, hoping to resolve the issue. Thousands more from as far away as Australia have Tweeted back at him and retweeted his message. She refused to settle by paying a fine and ended up in housing court this past spring. She eventually won her case, proving she made efforts to contact the city by attempting to negotiate and explain what plants were in her yard and how she cultivated them.
