A request to Defence Minister Anita Anand from industry executives to send 24 of our 200 Harpoon missiles has so far been passed over

The plan, laid out in a briefing note obtained by the National Post, advocated giving Ukraine Harpoon Block 11 anti-ship missiles from the Royal Canadian Navy’s inventory to help with coastal defence. The executives urged the minister to move quickly so the missiles could be sent “in days, not weeks.”

Yet, two weeks after the Canadian proposal was made there has been no progress on sending the only weapons system in Canada’s inventory that might make a difference on the ground in Ukraine. It is typical of Canada’s lacklustre response to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s appeals for weapons to defend his embattled homeland.Article content

Conservative MP James Bezan, who has raised the Harpoon plan with Anand, said Canada’s response to Ukraine’s requests have been paralyzed by red tape and lack of political leadership. “They are dragging their feet in the hope that the war is going to be over and Canada will be deemed to have done enough,” he said.Article content

On Sunday, Russian jets and warships attacked an oil refinery and fuel storage facility in the Odessa region.
