O’Toole cited wartime prime minister Robert Borden, who said that the political fortunes of MPs and parties should not divert the country from its national purpose.
The former Conservative leader professed himself confident about Canada’s future. Yet, his speech mapped a path of national decline that future Canadians will trace back to this Parliament. NATO is currently engaged in a major air-deployment exercise aimed at demonstrating its capacity to Russia. It involves 200 planes from 25 countries — including Japan and Sweden, who are not NATO members. Canada is not involved.
He said that, instead of leading and debating the national purpose in the House of Commons, too many MPs are “chasing algorithms down a sinkhole of diversion and division.”
