Jeromy Farkas resumes mountain climbing fundraiser yyc
The former Calgary city councillor and mayoral runner-up had planned to kick off 2023 by scaling 25 mountain peaks in the first 25 days of the year, with a goal of raising $25,000 for The AlexBut on Friday, after having completed 12 peaks, “considerable” avalanche risk in the southern Alberta backcountry forced Farkas toSign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
“I will be carefully resuming my climbs with a limited selection of mountains with safe terrain outside of avalanche zones,” Farkas wrote in a Twitter update Monday morning. “The situation remains fluid, so I will continue to practice good travel habits, heed expert advice, monitor for changes, and prepare to pause again at any time.”Article content
Avalanche Canada forecasters said while the danger is expected to be low in the South Rockies through the first half of this week, it’s still important to practice good travel habits — including having a safe area to regroup, limiting the number of people exposed to avalanche terrain at any given time and being careful of shallow or rocky areas where avalanches can be triggered.
“Whatever the avalanche danger rating, it is important that anyone travelling in avalanche terrain has a transceiver, probe and shovel, and the training to use them,” Avalanche Canada forecaster Diana Saly said Sunday., Avalanche Canada still warns of considerable risk in parts of Banff and Jasper National Parks, meaning human-triggered avalanches are likely. Other areas of Alberta are noted at a moderate level of risk.
