INDIANAPOLIS – Usually it’s poor performances on the playing field that drive a fading football star to the broadcast booth. In a surprise announcement, Witten said he is leaving ESPN – after a heavily criticized first season as co-commentator on Monday Night Football – to return to playing with the Dallas Cowboys.

Jason Witten has decided to end his retirement and return to the #DallasCowboys for what will be his 16th season.— Dallas Cowboys February 28, 2019Witten, who turns 37 in May, starred for 15 seasons with the Cowboys from 2003-17, posting Hall of Fame-worthy numbers for a tight end: 1,152 catches for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns.

After retiring a year ago this winter, Witten struggled as a TV commentator come summer, although the sharpest criticisms of last season’s entirely new MNF broadcast team were rightly directed at annoying play-by-play man Joe Tessitore, who tried way too hard to turn every minute development or comeback into a Bob Costas or Jack Whitaker style sports essay on the meaning of life.

The Cowboys didn’t get much production from tight ends in 2018. Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin combined for 39 catches for 423 yards and three touchdowns. In 2017, Witten alone caught 63 passes for 560 yards and five TDs. Now if the Cowboys can find a role for Tessitore, Monday Night Football might really become enjoyable again.
