Exclusive: Secret Invasion director Ali Selim breaks down his inspirations for the Marvel series, all of which are very far from comic book stories.

Though having a full franchise of options to look at, Secret Invasion director Ali Selim reveals his decidedly non-comic book inspirations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe series. Based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, the show finds Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury finally coming back to Earth after learning about a group of renegade Skrulls who are conspiring to take over massive positions of power and claim the planet as their own.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Screen Rant recently spoke exclusively with Secret Invasion's Ali Selim to discuss the next Disney+ chapter of the MCU. While reflecting on the development of the series, the director opened up about his biggest inspirations for the espionage-driven show, all of which were far from the comic book genre, namely Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, among others.

I was really excited about the aging Nick Fury who needed to go internal to reveal and get his mojo back and all that stuff. I was really interested in the themes of trust and the themes of suspicion, and identity, and that took me into film noir. So, the creative team and I talked a lot about The Third Man and Coppola’s The Conversation, which is a great piece about suspicion, paranoia. Nick evolves into this series into a very clear, classic American, Western, lone wolf gunslinger.

How Secret Invasion Can Set Itself Apart In The MCU In addition to his unique range of inspirations for the show, Selim's work at the helm of Secret Invasion marks a return to the early days of the MCU on Disney+ as he directs all six episodes of the series. The first handful of shows, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, all were brought to life under the eye of one director whilst subsequent shows Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms.

The other major element going in Secret Invasion's favor is the tone presented in the trailers for the show, which feels far darker and more paranoid than a majority of other MCU titles both in the recently concluded Phase 4 and franchise as a whole. Given one of the last times the comic book-based universe dove into the world of espionage was the critically acclaimed Captain America: The Winter Soldier in Phase 2, it will be interesting to see if the show can reach those same heights.
