Israel's Labor Party votes to join coalition rule despite previously vowing never to join arch-rival Benjamin Netanyahu-led government
Israelis wearing protective masks and dressed mainly in black, take part in a demonstration in Rabin Square in the coastal city of Tel Aviv, to protest what they consider threats to Israeli democracy, against the backdrop of negotiations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ex-rival Benny Gantz. April 25, 2020.
The once-mighty left-wing party dominated Israeli politics for the country's first three decades but has since fallen to a historic low of six seats in the 120-member parliament. Around 3,800 members of Labor's central committee will vote electronically on party leader Amir Peretz's proposal to join the unity government headed by Netanyahu and his main political adversary, Benny Gantz of the centrist Blue and White party.
Netanyahu is scheduled to face trial next month on charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes. He denies the charges. "We are joining an equal unity government with a rotation in the role of the prime minister, not a right-wing government," he said.
