Israelis protest against a unity government deal that leaves PM Netanyahu in power despite facing trial for corruption charges
An Israeli man wearing a protective mask and dressed in black, lifts a placard as he takes part in a rally on April 25, 2020, in Rabin Square in the coastal city of Tel Aviv, to protest what he and fellow demonstrators consider threats to Israeli democracy, against the backdrop of negotiations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ex-rival Benny Gantz.
The protesters rallied in the coastal city of Tel Aviv to denounce Monday's deal as manoeuvering by Netanyahu, who is facing trial on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. They wore face masks and observed social distancing rules in force to fight the spread of the novel coronavirus. Gantz, his former election rival and an ex-general, will serve as defence minister before taking on the premiership in October next year, with new elections to be held 18 months later.
