The Islanders and defender Adam Pelech have agreed to terms on an eight-year contract.

Though terms of the deal were not officially released by the team, the contract carries an average annual value of $5.75 million, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Generally regarded as one of the better defensive defencemen in the league, Pelech appeared in 56 games last season with the Islanders, posting four goals and 10 assists. The 26-year-old skated in 19 playoff games, too, contributing one goal and four assists. A third-round draft pick by the Islanders in 2012, Pelech has played in 303 regular-season games during his career, scoring 16 goals and adding 59 assists., and avoid posting profanity, personal attacks or harassment.
