Is COVID in a summer lull, or something more? There are reasons for caution — and for optimism. Across the country, COVID hospitalizations are now at their lowest level since early 2022.

As Canadians ease into summer, relishing sunny days and slower schedules, COVID-19 also appears to be taking it easy, offering a break from the spikes and surges of its recent past.hospitalizations are now at their lowest level since early 2022, when the arrival of Omicron triggered a tsunami of infections.

And, they note, while hospitalizations have dropped to the lowest levels in 18 months, the number of COVID patients in hospitals is — for now — still higher than during the first two pandemic summers when cases dramatically declined., 1,724 patients were hospitalized with the virus as of July 4. That compares to 810 patients on July 4, 2021, and 645 patients on July 4, 2020.

Sarah Otto, a professor at the University of British Columbia and researcher with Canada’s Coronavirus Rapid Response Network, known as CoVaRR-Net, said data shows that COVID levels have dropped fourfold since the spring.Omicron subvariants XBB.1.5 and XBB.1.16 “If that’s the explanation,” she added, “then we would expect this low to only last until the fall, when people go back inside, school is back in session, businesses close their doors, all leading to a rise in transmission.”Before Omicron raged onto the scene, just six per cent of Canadians had COVID antibodies in their blood due to infection.

“I’ve seen nearly none of that in well over a year,” said Razak, an associate professor at the University of Toronto. “And the number of people in the ICU on ventilators reflect that; it’s at a very, very low point.”
