Dustin Wolf was the AHL's MVP in 2022-23. Is it time for the Calgary Flames to open up a roster spot for the rising-star netminder?
The knock on Wolf has always been his size — he’s listed at 6-foot and 175 lbs. — but for the towering tandem of Jacob Markstrom and Dan Vladar, he must be casting a long shadow as he pushes for one of their jobs.
Vladar is signed for the next two years at an annual salary of $2.2 million US, which would be a bargain rate for a No. 1 netminder. While the 25-year-old has never been a go-to goalie in the NHL, he did piece together a 13-game point streak this past winter, posting a 10-0-3 record during a run that spanned two months.Article content
“I do think, at some point, Wolf needs to come up … and get in games. The only thing I don’t want him to do is not play. He has to continue to play.”This pre-period routine — the rising-star cringes at the word ‘superstition’ — started when Wolf was workhorsing for the WHL’s Everett Silvertips. He insists it isn’t borrowed from his former teammate Carter Hart, now the starting backstop in Philadelphia.
Honourable mention: Cole Schwindt, 22, capped an up-and-down campaign by scoring a few clutch goals for the Wranglers this spring.Article contentPelletier is poised to graduate from this list. This bundle-of-energy logged 24 big-league appearances this past winter — he was scratched for too many, but that’s another story — and should be pencilled in for full-time duties with the Flames.
