Dustin Wolf was the AHL's MVP in 2022-23. Is it time for the Calgary Flames to open up a roster spot for the rising-star netminder?

This high-flying prospect is the AHL’s reigning MVP and now a two-time winner of the goalie-of-the-year award on that stepping-stone circuit. In fact, this seventh-round steal from the 2019 NHL draft has been saluted as the top netminder in his league in four consecutive seasons after capping his junior career with back-to-back nods as best-between-the-pipes in the WHL.

The knock on Wolf has always been his size — he’s listed at 6-foot and 175 lbs. — but for the towering tandem of Jacob Markstrom and Dan Vladar, he must be casting a long shadow as he pushes for one of their jobs. Jacob Markstrom, left, and Dan Vladar of the Calgary Flames celebrate their 5-2 win against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Jan. 27, 2023.Markstrom, who followed up a Vezina Trophy nomination with a struggle of a season, likely needs to redeem himself before another squad would bite on his $6-million cap-hit. Besides, the belief around the Saddledome is that the 33-year-old Markstrom would be an ideal mentor for Wolf.

If the logical next step is for Wolf to serve as a big-league backup, like Saros was behind Pekka Rinne in Nashville and Demko was behind Markstrom in Vancouver, Vladar could be an appealing trade target for a team that can’t afford to enter the Connor Hellebuyck sweepstakes and doesn’t believe that Calgary-raised Adin Hill will hit the free-agent market after backstopping the Vegas Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup shaker.
