Americans over 50 are buying tech at unprecedented rates, making the tech industry a key contributor to the economic activity generated by this group annually paid AARP

e might not be commuting in flying cars yet, but we’ve come to depend on high-tech tools to regulate our environment, monitor our health and interact with those who live across the street or around the world. With a swipe of the screen or simple voice command, technology has transformed the way we interact with the world.

AARP, which has published reports about the undervalued influence of the 50-plus economy since 2013, found in its 2019that spending on tech purchases by 50-plus consumers is projected to reach $645 billion by 2050. The immense growth predicted for this portion of the tech industry is being fueled by sweeping societal changes.

“AARP realized that a lot could be done with technology that wasn’t being done,” Rick Robinson, vice president of product development for, said in an interview at CES in January. “We’re leveraging technology in a way that our audience can use it, meeting unmet needs or solving problems that aren’t being solved in the marketplace.”
