ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Information commissioners and ombudspersons are urging all levels of government across Canada to modernize their legislation on public access to information amid today's challenges in a drastically changed context.
In a release, Office of the Information Commissioner said Canada's freedom of information regimes are facing persistent challenges to respond timely to requests of access to information. "As recent news stories illustrate, timely access to accurate facts and reliable information is more critical than ever."The renewed resolution, which is the first issued this year, is built on a joint resolution issued in 2019.
Regulators are also urging the governments to act swiftly to advance transparency by modernizing the information management practices, while ensuring the preservation of Canada's documentary heritage that helps chart a path towards reconciliation.
