NS fans turn up for Crosby's homecoming | SaltWireOTTAWA – Former RCMP intelligence director Cameron Ortis allegedly sent an email demanding $20,000 to a B.C man under international criminal investigation in exchange for secret police information that contained the name of at least one undercover agent.

Ortis’ lawyers have previously stated they will argue that he had the authority to do everything he did. According to Kliewer, the RCMP first caught wind that it had an alleged leaker in its ranks after police arrested Vincent Ramos, the former owner of a B.C.-based tech company that sold hyper-encrypted phones to organized crime such as a Mexican cartel, in 2018.

After Ortis was arrested in September 2019, police searched his downtown Ottawa bachelor apartment and found a “whole lot of electronic devices and laptops”. Those targets were Salim Hanareh, Muhammad Ashraf and Farzam Mehdizadeh, who ran money service business in the Greater Toronto Area and were suspected at the time by the RCMP and international partners of being part of an international money laundering network operated by a man called Altaf Khanani, Kliewer said.

Ortis, sporting a tailored navy suit, white shirt, and rugged brown leather bag, listened intently to the proceedings from a table set up behind his lawyers Mark Ertel and Jon Doody. He occasionally took notes while a black laptop partially covered in sticky notes sat unused in front of him.As one of the top civilian members of the RCMP and head of the National Intelligence Co-ordination Centre , Ortis had some of the vastest access to both Canadian and allied intelligence in the country.
