HALIFAX — Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste announced his candidacy for the federal Liberal leadership race , stating he possesses both the financial resources and necessary signatures to formally enter the contest. Battiste made the declaration during an address to Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqey chiefs from across Atlantic Canada in Halifax, just hours before the 5 p.m. eastern deadline for applications in Ottawa.
Should he meet the deadline, Battiste will stand as the sole First Nations candidate vying to succeed Justin Trudeau, marking a historic milestone as the first Indigenous individual to contend for the position of Prime Minister of Canada. Battiste acknowledged the uphill battle he faces in the race but expressed enthusiasm for the challenge.
