41-year-old Lindsay Burgess, a provincial, national cycling champion, is being remembered for her fun, competitive spirit.
The death of a 41-year-old cyclist Sunday has stunned the South Island cycling community. Lindsay Burgess was hit in a Central Saanich intersection while competing in the 9th Annual Tripleshot CrossFondo.
Cycling, from mountain biking, indoor, to cross, was one of the loves of her life. No hill was too steep, no snow was too deep to keep her off her bike.At the start line, she’d crack jokes and wear fun outfits. At one of her last races, she donned a suit of sunflowers. “They put on a fantastic race every year so this is the worst gut punch that could possibly happen,” cycling promoter Jon Watkin told CHEK News Monday.
“The intersection there has a stop sign. The right of way at the time was for the vehicle,” Sgt. Paul Brailey of Central Saanich Police told CHEK News Monday. “Early investigation points to the fact that there could have been a miscommunication with the parties dealing with traffic at that location.”“Lindsay isn’t that kind of cyclist that people don’t like, that goes on the roads, rides doubles. She’s really risk adverse.
