Once rare in our waters, more than 250 humpback whales have been seen off the coast in recent years.
Jersey Shore Whale Watch Tours says that “whale sightings are guaranteed” on its website. About 90% of the trips include at least one humpback whale sighting and most tours include one to five sightings, the company said.Humpback whales were once rare visitors to the Jersey Shore. Now, it’s becoming increasingly common to see one of the largest recorded animals on Earth breaching the surface less than two miles from the coast.
The number of sightings has continued to rise since the study concluded. As of July, there have been 257 whale sightings in the area since 2012, scientists said. It may seem counterintuitive that humpback whales should spend so much time in an area that overlaps with human activities, including busy shipping traffic leading into the region’s ports. But scientists have a few theories for why the massive mammals stick around.
After a noticeable increase in humpback whale sightings off the coast of Belmar, photographer Bill McKim started Jersey Shore Whale Watch Tours in 2018. His first tour had six people on board and one of his recent tours had 125 people on board — so business is going well, he said.Jersey Shore Whale Watch Tours advertises that “whale sightings are guaranteed” on its website.
“Who knows what’s going to happen, but every year for the last five years there’s more and more whales,” he said.
