Tennis starlet Bianca Andreescu is taking Canada by storm as she continues her stunning run at the U. S. Open, where she will meet American legend Serena Williams in the final on Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern.

Bianca is already assured of winning the Canadian athlete of the year award, presented at the end of the year. In fact, if it wasn't for the incredible run of the NBA champion Toronto Raptors, Andreescu would be the top sports story in Canada in 2019. But No. 2 is not bad.A year ago, few people had even heard of Bianca, who ended the year ranked No. 178 in the world. Today, she has climbed to No. 15 and will jump into the top 10 on Monday when the new rankings come out.
About 12 years ago, Tennis Canada decided to refocus efforts on development and established a central training hub in Montreal, with satellite centers set up in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. The budget was increased to roughly $14 million from $3.5 million, and the results are paying off. Her first breakthrough came in 2014 when she went to France and won the Les Petits As, the biggest 14-and-under tournament in the world. Rafael Nadal won this tournament in 2000 and Martina Hingis was a two-time winner in 1991 and 1992. In 2014, Bianca also was the under-16 girls champion at the prestigious Orange Bowl in Florida.
In March, as a wild card, Bianca stunned the tennis world by winning her first career WTA title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. Bianca's three-set victory over Angelique Kerber boosted her world ranking to No. 24.
