The Western, based on the life of Back deputy marshal Bass Reeves, opens at Star Cinema Grill theaters Aug. 26.
Isaiah Washington attends 50th NAACP Image Awards Nominees Luncheon - Arrivals at Loews Hollywood Hotel on March 09, 2019 in Hollywood, California. The story of Bass Reeves, the first Black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River, will be getting told in myriad ways in the next couple years. Last May, it was announced that David Oyelowo will star as Reeves in a limited series for Paramount+, and Amazon is working on a Morgan Freeman-produced film based on a Reeves biography.
In this fictionalized account, Reeves is on the hunt for a sadistic outlaw and his murderous gang of bandits. The Houston-born actor admits he wasn’t aware of Reeves and his accomplishments before accepting the role. When he did learn of Reeves and his life and times, let’s just say he went through a lot of emotions.“Like I said in multiple interviews, I was disturbed— not angry — disturbed, disappointed in my home state, in my public-school system,” says Washington, 59, from his Venice, Calif.
