Islanders flock to Charlottetown Flea Market for affordable finds amid rising costs | SaltWireSYDNEY, N.S. — Karly Bernard prepared herself Wednesday morning before leading a Red Dress Day event at Cape Breton University in honour of the many Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people whose disappearances and murders have shaken Indigenous people and their communities across Canada.
Wednesday's event started at 10 a.m. with an informational video by Andrea Curley, general manager of the In.Business program at CBU, detailing the history of Red Dress Day and providing support resources. This was followed by a march led by Nina Kent and Tyra Paul, both dressed in red jingle dresses made by Kent. Their hand drumming set the rhythm for the procession. A single red dress displayed from a tree in front of CBU served as a symbol of remembrance and a call to action.
Students, staff and community members marched from Cape Breton University's multiversity room to a green space in front of the Marvin Harvey Building to hang a red dress, lay flowers and offer tobacco in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.
"The first time I danced, I went to a pow-wow in Whycocomagh with Nina and I was wearing different regalia but it was still her dress. When I danced, we played for a family who needed healing. One of their elders had just passed away, so we did our job and danced for them. I did not know what the jingle dress meant beforehand, but once I learned about its healing, and felt the family's pain and how much it meant to them, it was just magnetic.
