The Nova Scotia Native Women's Association is spearheading a ceremony and awareness walk slated for Sunday at 2 p.m. The event, dedicated to MMIWG2S , will commence at the Wentworth Park Bandshell. Ceremonies featuring solemn drumming and heartfelt speeches will pre-empt an awareness walk from Wentworth Park to the Jane Paul Indigenous Women's Resource Centre on George Street in downtown Sydney.
A smudging ceremony will be performed at the Jane Paul Centre, followed by a light lunch. Organizers urge attendees to bring red dresses, traditional drums and appropriate signage to amplify the message of remembrance and justice.Red Dress Park created at Cape Breton police station to honour missing and murdered Indigenous peopleNew Dawn Enterprises also plans to make a special announcement during the NSNWA event regarding the Rapid Housing Initiative project on Charlotte Street.
Elder Viola Christmas crosses herself as she starts the opening prayer at the ceremony held on Red Dress Day, also known as National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit people, held in Membertou last year. It took place at the Red Dress Commemorative Park, located on the front lawn of the Cape Breton Regional Police station in Membertou, and it was the first event held at the park since it opened last year.
