Meteorologist Jerry Shields says squalls will taper off Boxing Day as colder air moves in
A massive winter storm will hit Ontario just in time for Christmas. The heart of the storm arrives on Friday, with heavy snow for the Sault region and snow mixed with rain for southern Ontario. Strong gusty winds are again in the cards for our region throughout the next several days. The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds will make travel very difficult over this Christmas weekend.
Once the storm moves to the east, we expect northwest winds to churn up snow squalls off Lake Superior. These squalls are likely from late Friday right through to Sunday night. Total snowfall amounts will vary depending on snow squall activity, but most locations will have at least 20 cm of new snow by Friday night, and some locations could see as much as 40 cm!
The snow starts late Thursday and continues into Friday with at least another 15-25 cm of accumulation. The winds become northwesterly on Friday as daytime highs remain near freezing. The snow keeps coming into Christmas Eve, with squalls and another 10-15 cm. The gusty northwest winds will make temperatures at -7°C feel more like the minus teens. Northwest winds on Christmas Day continue the risk of snow squalls and more snow. Daytime highs continue to be near -7°C, with windchill values closer to -11.
The snow should finally end by Boxing Day, but even colder air will move into the region. Temperatures will fall to near -20°C in the morning and stay below -10°C all day.
