A heritage building in Orillia was tragically destroyed by a fire early Tuesday morning, displacing residents and businesses that called it home. The blaze erupted on the first floor of the three-story structure located at the corner of Mississaga Street and Peter Street. It rapidly spread to the second floor, resulting in the collapse of both the roof and the second story. Orillia Fire Chief Chris Ferry stated that the building is likely a total loss.

Fire crews from Orillia and neighboring departments worked tirelessly throughout the day to extinguish the flames. The block surrounding the intersection was closed for most of the day as firefighters diligently monitored for any remaining hotspots or flare-ups. Drone footage captured by Justin Mercer of D & J's Video Productions showcased the horrifying scene of heavy smoke and flames engulfing the top of the multi-storey building.Marley Lauro, a resident in a building adjacent to the one destroyed by fire, recounted her terrifying experience. She was preparing for work when a friend frantically called her, warning her of the imminent danger. Lauro grabbed only her dog, coat, and car keys, fleeing her apartment with nothing else. While fire crews successfully prevented the fire from spreading to Lauro's building, it still caused significant smoke and water damage. Lauro's ceiling collapsed, leaving her uncertain about when or if she will be able to return to her apartment. Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac expressed his sorrow over the loss of the over 100-year-old building, which housed numerous businesses and apartments. Chief Ferry indicated that crews would remain on the scene throughout the night, dousing the smoldering remains of the building with water
