A historic building in downtown Vancouver, deemed too dangerous to occupy due to severe structural deterioration, has been demolished. The building, which once served as a hotel, barracks, and social housing, has been vacant since 2013. The city ordered its demolition last month, citing risks of collapse. While the building's owner, Holborn Properties, argued it wasn't an immediate hazard, the city's chief building official stated that a lack of maintenance led to extensive rot and instability.

VANCOUVER — Crews in downtown Vancouver are demolishing a more than century-old heritage building that the city's chief building official says is so badly damaged it is at risk of collapse.

Last month the city ordered that the building owned by Holborn Properties come down, declaring it a danger to public safety"due to severe structural deterioration." He says if anything more inside the building were to fall it could lead to a"catastrophic cascading collapse without warning." "We understand the city’s building inspector has a contrary opinion on the structural integrity of the building," the statement says.
