Online streaming services are calling on the broadcasting regulator to use the extended timeline for implementing Bill C-11 to prioritize an updated definition of Canadian content before it decides how much those platforms would be required to pay to support it.
“If the goal is to help grow careers for emerging artists and help them grow their reach, that’s the type of factor the CRTC should be thinking about to create a modernized definition that fits today’s industry,” Wilson said. Wilson pointed to Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae's Greedy as one example of how the current definition falls short. In November 2023, it was the most popular song globally on the platform for four weeks, with more than 860 million plays worldwide.
