ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — An off-duty RCMP officer who held his loaded gun at a woman’s head received a conditional discharge and a year of probation in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John’s Tuesday.
Chaytor found Wheeler, who remains on unpaid suspension from the RCMP, guilty last November of pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm. Wheeler testified at his trial, as did his friend, Paul Durdle, who was also an RCMP officer at the time of the incident. The woman read aloud a victim impact statement at Wheeler’s sentencing hearing in April, telling the court she continues to suffer because of the incident, dealing with trauma and fear.
“Mr. Wheeler is not entitled to place blame on ,” the judge said. “The playful wrestling, while becoming annoying for them both, was innocuous until Mr. Wheeler introduced the firearm into the equation. It was solely Mr. Wheeler’s actions that made the situation extremely dangerous.”
