ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Job action shouldn’t be an issue now at five fish plants in the province after unionized plant workers at the locations voted to accept new labour contracts.
The Witless Bay plant workers will see increases on a dollar value, set at $0.90 in the first year, $0.55 in the second year and another $0.55 in the third year of the contract. On Monday, June 3, employees at the Icewater Seafoods Inc. fish plant in Arnold’s Cove, which employs about 200 people, voted 75 per cent in favour of accepting a new agreement reached by the union and the company.
But Warford said he does not consider the Witless Bay deal a win, even though the wage gains were on par or better than what were achieved at the other plants. He said the slim approval of the contract in Witless Bay stems from long-standing friction between the workers and management at the plant.
