Inshore and Indigenous fish harvester groups are not happy that the majority of the Gulf of St. Lawrence redfish quota is being handed to the offshore fleet.

Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence shrimp harvesters, as well as Indigenous harvesters, will receive 10 per cent each, while less than one per cent will be allowed as bycatch by the inshore fixed-gear fleet. The Newfoundland and Labrador Groundfish Industry Development Council is an association of fish harvesters, the Fish, Food and Allied Workers and several Newfoundland and Labrador fish processors, representing almost 7,000 industry participants.

The sharp decline in Gulf shrimp is attributed to both climate change and predation by the rapidly increasing redfish population. The council said it will be closely monitoring other allocation decisions made by DFO to ensure fairness for those living closest to respective resources and to ensure previously made commitments are upheld.FFAW-Unifor, the union that represents fish harvesters and plant workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, also issued a press release about the redfish decision and took aim at the province’s federal MPs for not doing more to help its members gain access to more redfish.
