Chris Smits had a revelation. The closure itself would be temporary — gyms have already reopened. But the change would be permanent. The industry would never be the same

. A study of more than 10,000 gym members conducted by RunRepeat in June found that 46 per cent of gym members globally do not plan on returning. More than a third have already cancelled or intend to cancel their memberships outright. To survive in the world of fitness, something needs to change.

The way it works is straightforward. The participants “meet” virtually, to complete an hour-long fitness class at home every weekday at 7 a.m., tailored by Smits to be suitable for someone without much space and with little professional equipment. The clients are divided into groups of four, and every Saturday, the groups meet to discuss their progress, describe their ongoing difficulties and plan for the week ahead.

“I actually found that during this online experience, people were even more committed to their training.”“On Zoom I can share the workout and watch my clients performing it,” Smits explains. “It makes them feel I’m there beside them, and that they’re being watched. The ability to give real-time feedback is a total game-changer.”

For anyone who has tried and failed to replace their gym with at-home workouts, that connection may make all the difference. The feeling of camaraderie and belonging is infinitely more motivating than the 5K runs and YouTube tutorials people were labouring through on their own in the spring. Engagement matters.Article content continued
