Several apartment buildings in Mariupol’s Left Bank neighborhood were constantly bombarded by Russian artillery.There is no clear estimate of how many civilians have been killed by Russian bombings in Mariupol, Ukraine.It remains unclear how much of the city is under Ukrainian control. The last known Western reporters, working for the Associated Press, were evacuated from the city earlier this week.
Residents who have escaped Mariupol in recent days describe Ukrainian and Russian forces waging a pitched, street-by-street battle for the city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated some 100,000 civilians remained trapped in the city. Recent estimates placed the city’s peacetime population at about 430,000.
