Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attacks on the port city of Maripul \u0027a terror that will be remembered for centuries to come\u0027
“One bomb at a time, the Russians cut electricity, water, food supplies and finally, crucially, the cell phone, radio and television towers,” says a report from Mstyslav Chernov,, who escaped Mariupol early last week, along with as many as 100,000 others who have fled the beleaguered city since the invasion began.
“When we arrived, emergency workers were still pulling bloodied pregnant women from the ruins,” Chernov said. “We had recorded so many dead people and dead children, an endless line. I didn’t understand why he thought still more deaths could change anything,” Chernov says. “I was wrong.”This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Josep Borrell, the European Union’s top foreign policy representative, said on Monday that the bombing was a “massive war crime.”
“Everything is destroyed. Where can we go?” said Irina Chernenko, a university librarian. “We’re cooking over a fire — for now we still have a bit of food and some firewood.” The Russian war effort, in much of the country, has stalled in the face of Ukrainian resistance, suggesting a substantial miscalculation on the part of the Russian military and intelligence apparatus. Zelenskyy’s government remains intact, and western aid, in the form of military hardware, has been pouring into the country.
Given the shelling of the city, authorities have pushed, for weeks, to allow for humanitarian corridors to let people leave the city; this has been met with limited success, and there’s considerable skepticism that Russia would honour such an agreement.
