Halt to federal funding leads to layoffs at immigration agency amid surge in newcomers yyc
The Centre for Newcomers said it laid off 20 staff last May and over 40 more last week after it was advised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada that its funding would run out, leaving a $4-million hole in its budget. That has occurred despite a dramatic increase in immigration over the last few years driven largely by those fleeing war-torn Afghanistan and Ukraine, said Anila Lee Yeun, president of the centre which had 300 employees at the start of the year.
A waiting list in Calgary for English-as-a-second-language instruction was already 4,000 people and will now be longer, she said. Waiting lists for mental-health supports for immigrants who’ve been traumatized by war or settlement challenges — that had been two to three weeks — will likely rise to as long as eight weeks, said Lee Yuen.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
