As immigration surges, halt to federal funding leads to layoffs at Centre for Newcomers yyc
It’s the first time since she’s been at the helm of the Centre for Newcomers that such a funding cut has occurred, said Lee Yuen.
Waiting lists for mental-health supports for immigrants who’ve been traumatized by war or settlement challenges — that had been two to three weeks — will likely rise to as long as eight weeks, said Lee Yuen. “In addition, the Department has, in the past, adjusted investments over the course of the year, to respond to pressures, such as an influx of newcomers, and when additional funding becomes available.”
