Breaking: Gyo Obata, the architect behind D-FW Airport and Galleria Dallas, dies at 99
With construction underway in 1973, architect Gyo Obata’s vision of a series of semicircular terminals astride a central spine began to take shape.Gyo Obata, the pioneering St. Louis architect who was instrumental in the development of North Texas, died on Tuesday at the age of 99. His works include Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and the Galleria shopping center, both produced by the firm he co-founded,, which grew into one of the largest architectural practices in the world.
Obata was born in 1923 in San Francisco to artist parents who had immigrated to the United States from Japan. With the beginning of World War II, they were swept up into internment camps, but Obata himself managed to find a place at Washington University in St. Louis.
That was the case with D/FW, which was completed in 1974. Obata described it as a “no-nonsense airport” designed for convenience and efficiency. The concept, inspired by a Hertz television ad, was that the walk from parking spot to gate would be no longer than the distance from the cabin door to the rear seat of a 747.
