In the winter of 1915\u002D1916, the First World War was not going well for the Allies.

A late spring delayed plans by several weeks, but on July 1, 1916, British and Empire forces launched a massive assault on German lines along the Somme River in the north of France.Article content On July 1, the 1st Newfoundlanders were to be part of the third assault wave. Their task was to root out German forces entrenched around the village of Beaumont-Hamel.
By 9:15 a.m., when the Newfoundland Regiment was ordered to attack, the battlefield was already strewn with dead and dying Allied soldiers.
