The Greater Victoria School District has put forward three alternate safety plans for approval by the Ministry of Education.

The Greater Victoria School District has put forward three alternate safety plans for approval by the Ministry of Education in time for the Jan. 6 deadline.

However, in a memorandum, the board says it does not believe the minister has the authority to require this of them. The first and second draft safety plans were created by the Greater Victoria School board, while the third was created by SD 61 staff and the special advisor appointed to assist with this work.would allow for police to return to schools in a non-emergency capacity, but requires that the officers assigned to schools have cultural sensitivity, restorative practice and trauma-informed training., which only allows for police in schools in emergency situations or when invited to attend .be approved.

“Given the multiple plans submitted by SD61, these reviews will take some time to thoroughly review,” the ministry says in a statement. “While it was initially understood that the Special Advisor had resigned, he subsequently clarified that he had not resigned, but rather, was no longer willing to advise the Board, as a result of the January 2 Board Resolution,” the memorandum says.
