The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) reports a 20% increase in digital borrowing for 2024, revealing popular reading trends in the Capital Region. Historical fiction remains a favorite among adults, while teenagers are influenced by 'BookTok', a TikTok community focused on books. Graphic novels continue to be popular with children. The library also notes a success with its first full year as a fine-free library, leading to a 22,000 increase in new library cardholders.

The Greater Victoria Public Library has unveiled its list of most borrowed books for 2024, offering a snapshot of the Capital Region’s diverse reading habits.

With over 3.5 million physical items and 2.5 million digital titles borrowed from area libraries this year, the data released Sunday by GVPL shows a surge in digital borrowing, which grew by more than 20 per cent. “Libraries provide access and choice,” GVPL CEO Maureen Sawa said in a statement. “Whether patrons prefer a physical book or a digital download, GVPL ensures they can access the stories, information, and resources they need.”The GVPL also said in its news release that historical fiction continues to be a favourite among adult readers, while teen borrowing was heavily influenced by viral trends on “BookTok,” a community on the social media app TikTok focused on books and literature.

2024 also marked GVPL’s first full year as an overdue fine-free library, a move aimed at reducing barriers and encouraging broader access to library services.
