The facility offers private rooms for patients, with space for their family members to stay overnight, too, if necessary. There are common areas for eating or socializing, but also separate areas for families to gather or speak to grief counsellors. Additional grief support programs for children and adults are also offered in the building.
“We’ve heard in the report we want to go this route,” he said. “So how sustainable is that over the long term versus other options, whether it be in continuing care, or some of these services are actually provided in hospital as well.” Melton said the move to the hospice was crucial for both of them, and it let them make their house a “sacred” space for their young kids to have a break from the challenges of brain cancer.
