OTTAWA — Liberal leadership candidate Karina Gould announced a plan to provide tax relief to struggling Canadians by lowering the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) by one point to four percent for a year. Gould unveiled this proposal during a campaign event held at an independent Ottawa bookshop. She also pledged to increase the corporate tax rate from 15 percent to 17 percent for businesses generating over $500 million in annual profits.
Gould, who resigned as House leader to pursue the leadership race, is one of six candidates vying for the position of Prime Minister to succeed Justin Trudeau.The other candidates in the race include former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and former MPs Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis. Baylis, a Montreal businessman, is set to initiate his campaign at an event in Montreal tonight. By today's deadline, candidates must pay a $50,000 fee to the party to remain in the competition.
