Karina Gould, a Liberal MP vying to replace Justin Trudeau as leader, unveiled a plan to temporarily reduce the federal sales tax and permanently increase corporate taxes for large corporations.
Liberal leadership hopeful Karina Gould outlined a two-pronged economic plan Thursday, proposing a temporary cut to the federal sales tax and a permanent increase in corporate tax es for large corporations. Gould, the MP for Burlington, Ontario, stated that if elected leader of the Liberal Party and subsequently Prime Minister, she would lower the federal goods and services tax ( GST ) from five percent to four percent for a one-year period.
She argued this would provide immediate relief to Canadians struggling with the rising cost of living. Gould emphasized that she was responding to the concerns of Canadians who frequently express that the cost of goods is too high and they need a break. She believes this measure demonstrates her commitment to listening to their needs. In addition to the temporary GST reduction, Gould proposed a permanent increase in the corporate tax rate from 15 percent to 17 percent for corporations exceeding $500 million in annual profits. She contends that this measure would ensure that these very wealthy corporations contribute their fair share and generate an additional $6 billion annually in federal revenue. Gould highlighted the need for corporations to pay their fair share, particularly those with substantial profits. The Liberal Party is scheduled to announce its new leader on March 9th. Two debates, one in English and one in French, are planned for sometime after February 17th. While Chrystia Freeland, the former finance minister, and Mark Carney, the former Bank of Canada governor, are currently considered the front-runners, Gould maintains that her campaign is resonating with grassroots Liberals. She stresses the importance of a democratic process where all members have a say, calling for a debate of ideas rather than a coronation. Gould also addressed the possibility of calling an election before Parliament reconvenes in March should she emerge victorious. She stated that her decision would be contingent on the prevailing circumstances and the government's priorities.
