Next up for the Giants will be either the Victoria Royals or Kamloops Blazers in a best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal likely to start next Friday at the Langley Events Centre
The Giants beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-1 Saturday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., to clinch the best-of-seven opening-round set in six games and, more important, win the franchise’s first postseason match-up since 2010.
The new series-clinching goal title for the Giants belongs to team captain Jared Dmytriw, the speedy forward whose end-to-end rush with Vancouver shorthanded ended with him ripping home a shot at 7:14 of the first period to make it 2-0. He had three goals in the series. Vancouver, which has been sparked all year by its mobile, puck-moving defence corps, got 10 of its 25 goals in the six games from rearguards. Dylan Plouffe, who was also outstanding throughout, led the way with four.
He had a couple of crucial saves early in the second as well, including kicking out a pad on a Payton Mount redirection on a Seattle power play at 4:43, when the score was still 1-0.
