Owen Hardy scored on a wrap-around with 6:26 to go in the first overtime period to give the Giants a 5-4 win over the Victoria Royals here at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre before a crowd of 4,622.Vancouver carries a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals into Game 4 in Victoria on Thursday.
The Giants topped the Western Conference in the regular season. They finished 29 points ahead of the Royals , who grabbed the second automatic playoff spot out of the B.C. Division and were sixth in points in the West.Alex Kannok-Leipert, a right-handed shot who snuck into the left face-off circle, took a feed the far corner from Davis Koch and rifled a shot past Outhouse with 4:20 to go to make it 4-4.
Royal PainsTeams are permitted three players in their 20-year-old season. Victoria was already missing one of theirs in forward Kody McDonald to a suspension for a stick-swinging incident in their opening-round series against the Kamloops Blazers. Oliver, 19, was Victoria’s top scorer in the regular season, with 49 points, including 27 goals, in 58 games. He has not played since a Feb. 23 game against the Giants, missing the final nine regular season games and all of the playoffs so far.
Giants coach Michael Dyck was fined $1,000 earlier this playoff for being critical of Seattle Thunderbirds defenceman Jake Lee receiving a two-game suspension for his cross-checking major after taking down Justin Sourdif on a breakaway from behind at the end of Game 1 of that opening round series.
